Oct 3rd

It was another day of seeing patients and visiting families. We had about 20 patients and were able to sharing the gospel with most of them. Glory to our God, there were 4 people accepted Christ and 1 guy is almost ready. We are sure that God has His plan for this guy and we have done our part. Alan, Eva and Emily had a chance to visit some Sunday school children’s families today. Despite the safety issues and living condition, we realize that some family is happier. This family has parents that really care for their children and try to spend time and communicate with the kids. They still live a busy life running a store and also worry about the language barrier, but they try their best anyway. The children in this family seem more responsive and out going. They were comfortable hanging out with us and carry conversation with us. We were glad to see that it’s not absolute sadness for the families living in Belize City. Either way, we do realize the urgency for them to know God and be able to get strength and comfort from God. That’s their only refuge and hope.

We ended the medical services after dinner time as there weren’t anymore patient. We took the chance to do our second team retreat instead. God granted us many good discussions and thoughts to ponder on. In the review time, we all had a lot to share. God always use us in our area of weakness so we realize the power of God and were able to glorify Him. Some of us are not very experienced with personal Gospel sharing, but thanks God that He gave us chances to practice and let us take part in planting the seed. We had a great chance observing and learning from the experienced teammates. This will help us establish a firm conversation and lead to sharing about the Gospel. Some of us realize that there’s special skill dealing with people with Chinese culture by not labeling them as sinner and respecting their “cultural believes”. While dealing with ones with busy lifestyle, we should always focus on establishing their personal relationship with God. We should not to push them to attend church activities and Sunday worship.

Oct 2nd

It was another slow day; we had a total of 22 patients only. We weren’t able to have in depth sharing with the patients as they usually come as family with little kids running around or in bigger group where they carry their own conversations. There weren’t any accepted Christ today. As there were only few patients, half of the team went out to visit local families in the afternoon. Dr. Chan, Dr. Chui and Emily went to visit a few Sunday school kids’ families with Fred, one of the GB from the local church. After dinner, we hosted our first seminar on Hepatitis by Dr. Law, and GI illnesses by Dr. Chui. There were less then 20 people attended while most are from the church.

Today started with some disappointment, but by God’s grace, we gained a lot from the sharing among us. Some of us see our weakness in sharing gospel. We realize that it takes training and practices to be able to share gospel through our day to day conversation.

The 3 that went to visit families had lots of thoughts and reflection, too. We really need to pray for the Chinese families in Belize City, as most of them lives in great fear. Children are “jailed” in their home; generation gap and language barrier between parents and children is a great problem also. Another concern for the Chinese families is that there’s no Cantonese speaking doctor in Belize City. Most people find the local doctor not trust worthy either. Most of the time, they do not address their health issues in time, and do not get the necessary treatments needed. They just wait till they go back to China to have check up and try to get medications. We learnt so much about the problems these people face living in Belize City and it helped us to appreciate our lives a lot more.

Thanks God for protecting the meds. The trailor has a bad leak in the pharmacy corner. After the over night rain storm, lot's of the meds was soaked in water. Luckily, only the paper boxes were soaked, all the meds that got wet are protected inside the plastic bottle. The paper packaged meds were not by the window.

Oct 1st

We cooked our own breakfast in the morning. Then we started our day with the group devotion. We arrived at the church around 9 and started to see patients around 9:30am. We had a total of 27 patients on the first day. God really blessed us with a great encouragement as 5 Patients accepted Christ. Today's experience showed most of us, how much we need to depends on God guidance to share the Gospel. Although the main language of this church is Mandarin, lots of the patients are Cantonese speaker from Southern China. We joined the regular church prayer meeting at night. Dr. Chan, Emily and Eva shared their testimonies. We reviewed our service together at night and shared our thoughts.

Sept 30th

Both teams met up at Houston airport and took the same flight down to Belize. We went through Belize custom quite smoothly. The custom insisted to open and check all the meds that we brought. They charged us tax and a “quarantine fee” for the meds and some books that we brought along as gifts. They also kept a few bottles of meds. All our luggage were searched but went through ok. The 2 teams, medical team and visitation team, separated at the airport. Medical team heading the Belize City and the visitation team to Belmopan, a city further away.

We rested at the B&B for a short time then headed to the church to set up the medical trailer and sort out the meds.

Then we enjoyed dinner and fellowship with the GB, brothers and sisters of the Belize church. We had our meeting with the GB after dinner to plan and confirm our services during our stay.

Here's the plan:

We will have medical consultation through out the day from 9am to 9pm. We will set up 2 stations and only 2 doctor seeing patient at a time so other can take care of the pharmacy and share the gospel with the patients. We will also plan to visit local Chinese at their business and share the gospel and promote our free medical services.

We will host 3 seminars:
Thursday night will be a seminar by Dr. Law and Dr. Chui in Mandarin, about Hepatitis and common GI track problems, eg. Stomach acid and gas problem, ulcer….etc.
Saturday afternoon will be a seminar by Dr. Chan in English, about First Aid and CPR. The target audience of this seminar is youth.
Sunday night will be a seminar by Dr. Law in Mandarin, about diet and self care for high blood pressure and diabetic patients.

Emily and Eva will host a Children program for about 20 kids, age 6 to 15, on Saturday afternoon.
